Hero’s Journey: Holes

Video

I think this is a really good example of the “Hero’s Journey” because it follows most of the stages.

The ordinary world: Stanley Yelnats is a regular teenage boy who lives with his family who has been cursed for 150 years, because of his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather who didn’t fulfill a promise he made to Madame Zeroni. Because he didn’t fulfill that promise, madame Zeroni put a curse on his family.  To prove that Stanley Yelnats 1 had a chest of valuables and when he was bringing it Kate Barlow stole it from him!! That shows some of the signs that there family was cursed!

The call to adventure: One day, Stanley was just walking down the street when all of a sudden a pair of shoes fall from the sky! He then get’s accused for stealing the pair of shoes, because a famous baseball player named Clyde “Sweet feet” Livingston, donated them. He then get’s sent to a camp called “Camp Green Lake”, a juvenile detention camp, instead of getting imprisoned for his crime.

Refusal of the call: Stanley had no choice because it was either that he went to Camp Green Lake or got imprisoned for his crime.

Mentor: It might seem like it’s not, but Zero ( Hector) is the mentor because he brings out the inner-hero in Stanley. His friendship with Stanley made Stanley get out of his misery and actually do something.

Crossing the first threshold: Stanley sets out to find Zero. While driving Mr. Sir’s truck, he drives it into a hole. He eventually finds Zero taking shelter under the remains of Sam’s boat, The Mary Lou.

Allies, friends & enemies: Stanley’s friends are Zero, Armpit, Zigzag, Squid, X-Ray, and Magnet. Some of his enemies were Warden Walker, Mr.Sir, and Dr. Pendanski.

Approach to the inmost cave: Stanley and Zero spot a rock called “God’s Thumb” in the distance. Zero faints from lack of water leaving Stanley having to carry him.

Reward: Without Stanley knowing, he breaks the family curse because Zero is a descendant of Madame Zeroni. When he carries Zero to the top of of the mountain, he sings to him and let’s him drink from the stream that runs uphill, fulfilling the promise that his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather made centuries earlier.

The road back: Stanley and Zero decide to go bake to Camp Green Lake to investigate the hole where Stanley had found Kate Barlow’s tube and uncovered a rusty old chest. The chest was the one that Kate Barlow had hidden a long time ago. In the chest was a lot of money, gold and other valuables.  The Warden, Mr. Sir, and Dr. Pendanski tried to take the chest away from them. When Ms. Morengo comes, the Warden accuses Stanley and Zero of stealing the chest. Angered, Stanley calls the Warden a liar. Zero also says that if they looked at the chest it said “Stanley Yelnats”. Ms. Morengo allows Stanley to take the chest home with him and also let’s Zero go with him.
